Online Poker On the Up and Up in 2012 Online poker traffic in the first week of 2012 has increased by almost 10 percent, according to an independent online poker study performed by PokerScout, an online poker traffic monitoring website. Although the general trend was to have an increase in traffic at online poker sites, it seems that the French PokerStars site had somewhat of a decline in its player base. It has been said that the reason for this is the new way that PokerStars has decided to calculate the rake, and the new version of how to calculate VIP points. It seems that many poker players have chosen not to play at PokerStars in protest. PokerStars.com, however, has had about a 5 percent increase for real money games during the same time period. While PokerStars.com has had some increase in traffic, it is not as high as the increase in the traffic to other online poker operations. Party Poker’s increase in player volume reached 29 percent in the first week of January, and this increase is most likely because of the changes that this poker site has made because of its VIP rake race promo which was launched on 2nd January 2012. Because of this increase in players, the online poker site moved up in rank to reach the position of the second largest online poker site in the industry, with the iPoker Network drooping down a position. While online poker traffic was up for the first week of the New Year, 2011 showed a general decline in online poker traffic by 31 percent on a global level. This decline, however, is due to the legal actions that took place in the United States that was aimed at some of the bigger online poker sites such as PokerStars, Absolute Poker, and Full Tilt Poker. He came into the final table fourth in chips. When play restarted three months later, many were surprised at Collins’ limping strategy. For this edition of the Strategy with Kristy podcast, brought to you by South Point, Collins discusses his Main Event, interesting spots he encountered, and the thought behind his limping strategy at the final table. Here is a snippet from the interview: I may have million in online winnings, but I have nowhere close to that in my bank account. One of the big concerns I had going into the final table was just how absurd the money jumps were going to be, specifically life money jumps. Even though it looks like all the big money jumps might be up top, they’re still very significant from ninth to sixth. It’s a million-dollar jump. I may never play another final table for the next five years where first is a million dollars, let alone just a difference between ninth and sixth. It was really important to me to do something that was low variance. Even though I wanted to play for the win, and I wanted the title very bad, it was kind of financial suicide for me to go out ninth. It would be pretty unacceptable to know that if you play a tight and solid game and literally just fold to move up, you can. You’re almost guaranteed to do that if you just fold every hand. A couple of people will bust. But, I still wanted to play lots of hands. I’ve limped in the past, so I have a limping range I’ve done online in tournaments. I was somewhat comfortable doing it. It’s one of those strategies that you kind of have to dedicate yourself to if you’re going to do it. You can’t just limp some hands because if they figure out which hands you’re limping, you’re just going to get exploited. You’re going to have to limp everything, and let them know, “I could have aces, or I could have queen-jack.” It puts the ball in their court. I was also playing against players that like to three-bet a lot, specifically Pius Heinz. When he got a lot of chips from Eoghan O’Dea, that was terrible for me. I had a guy on my right with a lot of chips that I was planning on maybe taking some from. He’s a great player, but obviously, I’d rather have O’Dea with chips on my right than Pius on my left. Ben Lamb three-bet a lot too. Sam Holden and Anton Makiievskyi both had re-shove stacks, so if I played an opening game, I was going to be running into re-shoves and three-bets. I was basically unwilling to four-bet shove without the nuts like queens, kings, aces, or ace-king. That means I had to limp because I was never going to four-bet shove light. You can still win the tournament that way, too. If things started working out well for me, like if I would have doubled quickly, coolered someone, or tricked someone really bad with aces, or won a big pot with jack-nine because I limped it, then I might have just completely flipped if I got up to a top-three stack. I might have just raised every hand after that. But, with Pius getting chips, and me just staying short, I just stayed with the limp the rest of the way. I’m not too proud of it, but I actually think it worked. Podcast Powered By Podbean Tune in every week for new episodes of Strategy with Kristy, brought to you by South Point. Last week, he talked about what it takes to be a professional poker player. This week, Kim talks about interesting hands he’s played recently and also discusses a couple of hands he watched his students played. Here is a snippet from the interview: Let me tell you a really quick story about why you want to take your time making decisions. In the 2006 [World Series of Poker] Main Event, the year Jamie Gold won it, I ran pretty good and made it to Day 5. We were down to 73 players. I had 30 big blinds or something close. Everyone folded to me in the small blind. I had jack-ten offsuit. I limped or raised, my action doesn’t really matter, but he looked over at my stack and contemplated raising. Obviously, he has a pretty good hand if he’s thinking about raising preflop. He was just a standard player, nothing out of line. The flop came ten-two-four rainbow. I just remember thinking, “OK, I have top pair. I have 30 big blinds. I guess I have to go broke.” That’s obviously the wrong way of thinking. I think I bet, he raised, I three-bet, he shoved, and I snap-called without even thinking. He rolled over king-ten, and I busted in 73rd. It’s the worst feeling when you bust after playing five days in the Main Event. When I walked away, I was just thinking, “Man, why did I do that?” If I thought about it, I could have avoided going broke there. I knew he wanted to raise preflop, so if he’s raising my bet on the flop, he always has ace-ten or king-ten. I should have taken my time and thought about that. Here’s the other thing. I finished 73rd, but the two guys who finished 72nd and 71st are right behind me. My payout was, ,000 or something like that, and 72nd paid a little over 0,000. Literally, if I would have just thought about it for three seconds, I would have made an extra ,000. So ever since then, I told myself that I would never act in haste. Always think every decision through. Podcast Powered By Podbean Tune in every week for new episodes of Strategy with Kristy. Casino Hold’em from World Match World Match, the online casino software provider and developer, has released a new and exciting online casino poker game. The new game is called Casino Hold’em. The game is based on the very popular Texas Hold’em poker game, however, instead of poker players playing against each other, they are playing against the online casino, and not against the other players. World Match has made sure to design the game area to make it clear to players so that they can easily spot winning combinations. The game has cards that are bigger than the normal cards that are used in Texas Hold’em online poker games, and also have 3D graphics to enhance the playing experience. The 3D effects add a touch of realism, and give players more of the feel of an actual land based poker room. Yes its more Black Friday news to report. A quick recap? On April 15 of this year the three major online poker sites operating in the U.S. were shut down by the Depart of Justice pending an investigation. The sites were accused of operating illegally, breaking the Wire Act and money laundering. In court this week Brent Beckley, the co founder of Absolute Poker website plead guilty to charges.

Beckley admitted before the court that he knowingly filtered American player funds through cover companies so their payment could be processed by American banks. In American online gambling is illegal and most banks will automatically stop any payment to a known poker website. Because Absolute Poker laundered the money through shell companies they manage to process millions of dollars within American borders.

Beckley was facing a thirty year plus jail sentence before he plead guilty to fraud and money laundering charges. According to news sources he has worked out a plea bargain with the court system which will assure he spends less than two years in jail. Beckley is 31 years old.

U.S. Attorney in the case Preet Bharara released a press release from his office discussing the Absolute Poker case. He discusses the Internet Gambling Act of 2006 and the choice of several casino sites to ignore the official prohibition against online gambling within United States. Because the casinos had their headquarters in other countries they managed to operate for a few years before the Department of Justice had enough evidence to shut down their domain names.

There was no mention of a plea bargain by the District attorney’s office and sentencing is set for April 2012.

Well we mentioned briefly the other day that the Wire Act had been officially reinterpreted to specifically relate to sports betting online and not game playing. After a few years of political pressure combined with a dire need for money across the states, it seems baby step one for a federally organized online gaming industry has been taken.

Since the economy took a plunge back in 2008 states have been scrambling to save money. There have been rolling black outs, canceling public programs and funding and basically looking to cut corners across the board. A state based online gambling system, eventually back by federal mandate, could ostensibly boost a state economy and provide sustainable new growth.

Besides the fact that online casinos will provide a place for state residents to spend their money it will provide a number of new jobs in related industries. If new websites are about to spring up across the country those new sites need web designers, computer programmers, app developers and content writers to sustain them. There needs to be publicist, marketing departments and accountants; not to mention lawyers, underwriters and policy makers. Job creation would be almost instantaneous.

But of course we are still in the possibilities stage with the Wire Act interpretation. There has been no official ruling or report regarding the relationship between online poker gambling and the Wire Act. The recent ruling regarding sports betting being different from state based lotteries is just the opening of a door. It is something that online poker proponent can build upon in the coming year.

We’ll see which states begin work on their own online gaming policies in the coming month. I’m sure a large majority will finally see the light and boost their local economy.

Pokernewsreport.com is reporting that Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, two of the casualties of Black Friday, are now in a position to pay back their players. The money was frozen when the websites were seized by the Justice Department. The problem is that not only are the refunds late in arriving they will not compare to the actual money lost.

The rumor is that the poker giants will be paying back as little as 25 cents on the dollar. Other rumors have suggested that folks that want to receive their payment may have to go through quite a process. As the Department of Justice will be facilitating refunds to the Full Tilt customers we can expect something similar with Absolute and UB. Becoming a part of the federal record for illegal gambling is probably not going to be a popular choice.

Its hard to believe that so many months have passed and the players of the Big Three casino sites are still not getting their payday. The amount of money that has been spent on lawyers, investigators, report writers and court fees could explain why players will be losing their winnings. I’m pretty sure you can’t claim gambling losses occurring on an illegal website.

The drama that has been 2011 in the world of poker shows no signs of stopping in the new year. With board members and owners still to be prosecuted, transfer deals still to be worked out and of course federal legislation still to pass, the world of poker will be in a turmoil for quite a while to come. Lets just hope after the dust settles that poker will emerge a stronger game, more regulated and with better clearer rights for the players.
